Gabrielle Giffords, het Democratisch Congreslid dat vanavond werd neergeschoten in Arizona, stond op een agressief affiche van Sarah Palin met de namen van Democratische voorstanders van Obama’s zorghervormingsplan. De webpagina met het affiche is na de moordpartij snel weggehaald. Op de poster prijken de 'kruisen' van een geweer-vizier. Achter de namen van vertrekkende tegenstanders is een rood vierkant gezet en ook de vizieren op 'hun' staten zijn rood gekleurd.
In een tekstje op haar Facebookpagina bij de postercampagne schreef Palin: 'This is just the first salvo in a fight to elect people across the nation who will bring common sense to Washington'.
Natuurlijk is het te vroeg om te weten of de dader van de schietpartij tot de extreemrechtse beweging van de Tea Party en Palin hoorde. We zullen zien.

Peter van der Ploeg van het NRC Handelsblad heeft meer meer feiten.
Het NOS Journaal van 20.00 uur vandaag noemde wel dat in de VS het agressieve politieke debat als factor wordt geopperd - en liet de sheriff van Tucson zien die dit standpunt vertolkte, hij veroordeelde het 'verbale vitriool' van media die hij niet met name noemde-, maar vanwege de zoals zo vaak doorgeschoten zogenaamde 'onpartijdigheid' werd daarbij niet vermeld wat voor de neutrale en oplettende waarnemer een onmiskenbaar feit is: de rabiate taal wordt bijna uitsluitend gebezigd door het (extreem)rechtse kamp, zoals de Tea Party, hysterisch schuimbekkende bloggers als Pamela Geller (de compaan van Geert Wilders) en via Fox News en rechtse radioshows. Op die manier vervalt de NOS tot partijdigheid - het verzuimen verslag te doen van saillante negatieve feiten omtrent de (extreem)rechtse maatschappelijke krachten is een indirecte vorm van vergoelijken of bevoordelen daarvan.

Loughner keert zich in zijn psychotisch aandoende verwarring - hij beweegt zich in een van zijn video's met een soort broek van vuilniszakplastic aan bizar rond een in de grond gestoken Amerikaanse vlag, herhaalt in zijn schrijfsels dwangmatig een verknipt 'syllogistisch' denkschema waarin elke logica zoek is en kraamt ook onzin uit over onsamenhangende reeksen jaartallen - dus niet alleen tegen overheidsfunctionarissen maar ook tegen 'landeigenaren' (al noemt hij ze wel in één adem), wat het onwaarschijnlijk maakt dat hij bij de Tea Party gerekend moet worden; gegeven zijn gekte lijkt enige politieke typering van de persoon Loughner sowieso nogal onzinnig - zie ook het artikel van Adele M. Stan hieronder en dit commentaar.

To call Jared Lee Loughner a Tea Partier is not a credible claim. But the Tea Party culture of political intimidation affirmed his violent impulses.
(...) All we really know about Jared Lee Loughner, the 22-year-old alleged shooter, is that he is apparently a profoundly disturbed young man whose paranoia involves some indecipherable notions about the U.S. Constitution, and may have had an accomplice.
Some say Loughner regards himself as a leftist, others chart him on the right. But the screen shots of his (now deleted) MySpace page and the incomprehensible videos he posted on YouTube - as well as another video he named a "favorite" that shows a masked, hooded figure burning an American flag to a soundtrack of a chant, "Let the bodies hit the floor" - seem short on coherent ideology and long on violent impulse.
So to those who would like to attribute Loughner's actions to the Tea Party, I say, hold up; take a breath. But to those on the far right, and to the more mainstream right-wingers who fail to condemn the poisonous claims of the far right, I say, you're hardly off the hook.
Had the vitriolic rhetoric that today shapes Arizona's political landscape (and, indeed, our national landscape) never come to call, Loughner may have found a different reason to go on a killing spree. But that vitriol does exist as a powerful prompt to the paranoid, and those who publicly deem war on the federal government a patriot's duty should today be doing some soul-searching.

The alleged Tucson shooter is 22. According to the New York Times, “a witness to the shootings and a former emergency room doctor who now works at a hospice. ‘I think it was a semiautomatic, and he must have got off 20 rounds.’”
(...) I don’t believe this tragedy should be reduced to a debate over the disturbed shooter’s motives.
But how on earth can we even have a discussion on decent gun control laws when guns and the gun lobby are woven into the fabric of life for those of us who grew up in Arizona?
(...) In my 40-year relationship with this state, I have never witnessed such overt hatred on the level that has been spewed by politicians and talking heads over the past year or so. Earlier this spring, many of us warned of a tipping point of violence in Arizona–and around the nation.
