We knew our first-ever report card on in situ oil sands impacts released Wednesday would garner some attention and hoped it would spark discussion about solutions to address the growing environmental impacts of deep oil sands production. Sure enough, the report gained media attention across North America and a flurry of responses from politicians.
Many in industry and government have been (inaccurately) painting in situ oil sands green. In situ projects get to bitumen that's too deep to mine, using drilling and steam injection, so there are no expansive tailings ponds created or open pit mines dug scarring the boreal landscape. In short, in situ oil sands projects aren't as photogenically disturbing as the open pit mines.
But as our findings revealed, some in situ oil sands operations' environmental performance is not only far worse than it could be, but on a number of counts, their level of environmental impact is even greater than that of oil sands mining operations.

De desastreuze jacht op olie uit teerzanden wordt mede mogelijk gemaakt door de kennis en computersimulaties van natuurkundigen; een medewerker van Shell schrijft: 'Exploitation of oil and gas fields is becoming increasingly more difficult and expensive. Many existing fields start to decline and enhanced recovery techniques are required to improve production and ultimate recovery and reduce impact on the environment. New fields often are in remote and (environmentally) hostile locations, the reservoir rock is geologically complex (heterogeneous, fractured[*] and faulted) and the hydrocarbon fluids are difficult, for example, oil is ultra heavy, gas is sour or otherwise polluted. To mitigate the risk of developing such hydrocarbon reservoirs, large scale computer simulations are invaluable.'
En: 'There are still huge hydrocarbon reserves left if also the (ultra) heavy oils and oil sands are included in the accounting. Heavy oil can be produced by heating the fluid, usually by injecting steam [zie hierboven; K] (though electrical subsurface heaters could be used too).'

'Environmentally hostile locations'!
