Paleoclimate Record Points Toward Potential Rapid Climate Changes
Door Joe Romm, Climate Progress, 14 december 2011
[Scientists James Hansen and Ken Caldeira, discuss] whether we are headed toward 25 meters of sea level rise or 70 meters at the end. For some of the science, see Science: CO2 levels haven’t been this high for 15 million years, when it was 5° to 10°F warmer and seas were 75 to 120 feet higher - "We have shown that this dramatic rise in sea level is associated with an increase in CO2 levels of about 100 ppm".
The “Profound Contradiction” Between Science and Markets on the Road to 5°C Warming
Door David Roberts, 11 december 2011
[...] On one side, the world’s governments have pledged to hold temperature rise to 2 degrees C (3.6 degrees F). To have even a 50/50 shot at meeting that target, humanity has a “carbon budget” of about 1,400 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide between now and 2050. [...] If countries are serious about 2 degrees, they must be planning to leave a lot of fossil fuels in the ground. Right?
On the other side, however, the world’s top fossil fuel companies are valued at some $7.42 trillion (including the top 100 listed coal companies and the top 100 listed oil and gas companies). They are valued at this level because of proven fossil fuel reserves to which they have access. In other words, their valuation carries the implicit assumption that they will burn the fossil fuels available to them.
Markets are assuming that fossil fuel companies will burn the fossil fuels that the world’s governments have, at least implicitly, said they cannot burn. That’s the “profound contradiction.”
IEA’s Bombshell Warning: We’re Headed Toward 11°F Global Warming and “Delaying Action Is a False Economy”
Door Joe Romm, Climate Progress, 9 november 2011
International Energy Agency: “On planned policies, rising fossil energy use will lead to irreversible and potentially catastrophic climate change.”
“[...] we are on an even more dangerous track to an increase of 6°C [11°F] [...]. Delaying action is a false economy: for every $1 of investment in cleaner technology that is avoided in the power sector before 2020, an additional $4.30 would need to be spent after 2020 to compensate for the increased emissions.”
Extreme Weather Has Helped Push Tens of Millions into “Hunger and Poverty” in “Grim Foretaste” of Warmed World
Door Joe Romm, 29 november 2011
Climate Change Endangers Food Security Worldwide. “Extreme weather like the droughts in Russia, China and Brazil and the flooding in Pakistan and Australia [in 2010] have contributed to a level of food price volatility we haven’t seen since the oil crisisof 40 years ago. Unfortunately, this could be just a taste of things to come because in the next few decades the build-up of greenhouse gases already in the atmosphere could greatly increase the risk of droughts, flooding, pest infestation and water scarcity for agriculture systems already under tremendous stress.” — John Beddington, UK Government Chief Scientific Adviser
