New York Times runs absurdly misleading headline on (...) sea level rise (...)
By Joe Romm, Climate Progress, May 14, 2009
You have got to be kidding me. Just for the record, the study doesn’t actually alter the “prediction of rising seas” in your lifetime — or your grandchildren’s lifetimes — one inch.
More accurate would be Reuters, 'West Antarctic ice threat revised down; still dire'. It’s a good headline because it is specific and focuses on what matters to readers.
Note by me, Gaia: same goes for the deplorably misleading headline used by nearly all Dutch media: Zeespiegelstijging ‘zwaar overschat’ [translation: Sea level rise 'heavily overestimated']. When relatively uninterested people read this, they think it's proof of a big general failure of climate science to predict sea level rise, which it is definitely not. The media are helping the global warming deniers a lot with this headline... Well, it's one example of the Very Bad Mainstream Journalism on climate change in The Netherlands, a remarkable phenomenon in the lowlands of Europe. The term 'Clay Ostrich' comes to mind...
And the excellent ar(c)ticle:
Predicted Impact From Antarctic Ice Melt Lessened
By Richard Harris, NPR, May 15, 2009
The West Antarctic ice sheet really can collapse and regrow
